Chapter Forty-Seven

Detective Kim Mallory asks again, this time with a bit more edge to her voice, "What are you two doing?"

It takes Eddie a second to place her; he realizes it's his "interview" with Detectives Riddle and Johnson. She's the detective, the Natalie Portman look-alike who fixed the laptop, the one on which Detectives Johnson and Riddle played Eddie the video of his and Shelby's night together: their dinner at Tia Mia's, the two of them together in her bedroom, and the video of her murder.

Eddie tells Detective Mallory, "Just having a chat, detective."

Mallory's eyes narrow. "Looks like a pretty rough chat."

Eddie and Yuri uneasily let go of one another entirely. Each man is half-expecting the other to get in some last licks, but the presence of Detective Mallory keeps them both in line.

Once the two men are safely disentangled, they get to their feet.

For a moment, no one moves. Eddie wonders if he's about to be arrested again. The younger Russian stands there, trying to look cool, despite his ruddy face and heavy breathing.

The Uncle hooks his nephew by the arm, and in a deep, gravelly voice, says something in Russian, then leads his nephew away. Yuri holds Eddie's gaze as he walks backward; the look is meant to be intimidating, and conveys a message as clear as cheap vodka: This isn't over between us.

Eddie doesn't break eye contact with the Russian fighter, watching Yuri until he turns his back and walks away with his uncle to find their car.

She sighs. "You know, every time I start thinking that Hollywood people aren't all out of their minds, something reminds me they are."

Detective Mallory further says, "Fighting in public the day after you're arrested in connection with a homicide is what we professionals call 'suspicious behavior.' "

Eddie turns to face her. "So, are you planning on following me everywhere now, Detective?" he asks, not trying to hide his disdain for her.

"Don't flatter yourself," she scoffs. "That's not how this works. I didn't follow you here, Mr. Ankin. I'm here on other business." She turns away from him and heads for reception.

Eddie follows her from the garage into the lobby of the building. "What are you and the other detectives doing to find Shelby's killer?"

She gives him a sideways glance. "If I were you, Mr. Ankin, I'd go home and stay there." She raises an eyebrow. "Until we come for you again." Eddie stops walking while Mallory continues to the receptionist's desk.

Eddie hangs there a moment, watching her. As he is turning to leave, he hears Detective Mallory tell the receptionist she is there to meet with Trevor Mitchell.

This stops Eddie. He registers the coincidence. He's tempted to turn around, go back, and ask Mallory what she wants to talk to Trevor Mitchell about, but he decides now is probably not the best time; he should get gone. He has plenty to do.

Eddie returns to find the valet back at his stand. The Latino kid in the red windbreaker is smiling, letting Eddie know that he saw the whole thing.
